The Position
An eligibility list is being established to fill current and future extra help vacancies for this position. This is a seasonal position. Generally, seasons run from February/March through September/October. We have an immediate need for the 2023 season. Opportunity to return for subsequent seasons may be available and is dependent upon program needs.

The Agricultural & Standards Service Worker I/II - Extra Help will assist the staff by performing a variety of assigned support tasks related to inspections, violations, and report writing.

This position requires punctuality and strong continuous attendance. Schedule flexibility during the season is minimal.

Telework Availability - Teleworking is not permitted during the first six (6) months of employment and/or during the first six (6) months of a probationary period. Should teleworking be permitted by a hiring department after the 6 month requirement, the County supports a telework schedule that consists of a maximum of two (2) days per week.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS
1. Applications will be accepted on-line on a continuous basis.

2. Subject Matter Experts will review responses from supplemental questions on a continuous basis. The most qualified candidates from the scoring of supplemental questions will be invited to an Oral Panel Interview.

3. Oral Panel Interviews will be scheduled on a continuous basis by the hiring department. Only the most qualified candidates from Oral Panel Interviews will be placed on the eligibility list and referred to the hiring manager for further consideration.

The Human Resources Department reserves the right to make changes to the recruitment process and schedule at any time.

Example of Duties
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Inspect farms, home-sites, and other property for the presence of agricultural pests; Explain purpose and methods of pest monitoring projects to property owners; Deploy, service, and monitor insect traps; Select trapping sites and host plants; Prepare and maintain maps identifying trap locations and record dates serviced and monitored; Collect insects and pests and prepare specimens for transport to laboratory for identification; Inspect and test wine grapes and other commodities for compliance with standards and requirements in the California Food and Agricultural Code, California Code of Regulations, and County ordinances and contracts; Select commodity samples for inspecting and testing to property owners; Reflect substandard commodities; Collect and maintain data regarding commodity sampling; May respond to inquiries from property owners regarding pest monitoring and eradication projects; May also assist in the identification, management, and eradication of pest infestations; May inspect, and test, commercial weighing and measuring devices; Assist in taking action against defective or false weighing and measuring instruments and appliances; Inspect retail pumps and perform uncomplicated tests for product conformance to legal standards; Set up and maintain testing equipment, standards, and devices; Clean, maintain, and organize shop tools and hardware; Compile and organize daily and monthly reports; Perform related duties as assigned.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Agricultural pests and diseases commonly found in California.

Procedures and materials used in the detection and eradication of serious insects.

Agricultural laws, rules and regulations governing inspection of wine grape products.

Testing procedures

Use of basic mechanic tools.

Basic mathematical formulas, volumetric measure and basic principles of physical science.

SKILL TO:

Communicate orally with County employees, the public and other agencies.

Read and interpret maps to ensure correct placement of traps or identify the location of pest infestations.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Analyze situations accurately.

Prepare clear, understandable, grammatically correct written reports.

Use a computer to prepare reports and records.

ABILITY TO:

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities. A desirable combination is:

Agricultural and Standards Service Worker I

Experience:
No related experience is required.

Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Agricultural and Standards Service Worker II

Experience:
No related experience is required.

Education:
Equivalent to completion of two years of college with major coursework in agriculture or biological science, or related field. (Additional qualifying experience performing work in pest detection, pest management, pest control operations, or other agricultural related work can be substituted for the education on a year for year basis.)

License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California Driver's License required for either classification.

PUBLIC SERVICES EMPLOYEES BENEFITS INFORMATION

SALARY -
Salaries are based on a five-step range. Appointments are usually made at the beginning step with advances occurring at six months and the completion of each year thereafter. Salary rates are reviewed annually.
