The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or closely related area within the thermal/fluid sciences. Candidates nearing completion of the terminal degree may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the degree must be met no later than August 17, 2022. Candidates must have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, proficiency in written and oral English, and expertise in thermal/fluid sciences.
Preference will be given to candidates with a proven record of effective teaching at the undergraduate level; in particular, experience teaching upper-division thermodynamics, advanced thermodynamics, and heat transfer. Additionally, industrial experience in mechanical engineering, and/or demonstrated success as a mentor or advisor to academic or professional groups or individuals is preferred. Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and administration from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Bilingual candidates will be given preference.
This tenure track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching and course development at the undergraduate level (this is primary). Develop an area of scholarship and professional growth leading to dissemination through peer-reviewed forums, pursue external funding to support research, and mentor undergraduate students on research. Student advising, serving on academic committees and industry associations, supporting the Department's industrial advisory board, engaging in outreach and recruitment activities, and contributing to goals of the Program, College, and University. This position includes advising capstone senior design teams, which involves working closely with students and industry sponsors. Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department.
Candidates will be responsible for maintaining a collegial and respectful working environment while collaborating with other faculty, staff, and students within the department as well as outside the department and college.
The Department of MMEM offers two accredited engineering B.S. degrees: Mechanical Engineering (367 current majors) and Mechatronic Engineering (156 current majors) and a B.S. degree in Advanced Manufacturing and Applied Robotics (22 current majors). The Department also offers a minor in manufacturing (24 current minors). MMEM is one of seven departments in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management.
The department prides itself in maintaining rigorous curricula, delivering programs that are practice-oriented with a strong design focus, and having accessible faculty who provide a high degree of personal attention to all students. A major strength of the department is the Capstone Design Program sponsored by industry partners that provides hands-on design projects for cross-disciplinary teams of mechanical and mechatronic engineering and advanced manufacturing students to design, build, and test real-world solutions. The department has several active student clubs and organizations that include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Institute of Mechatronic Engineers (AIME), Materials Research Society (MRS), Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), and the Alternative Energy Club. The College and Department typically support several major extracurricular student projects such as the Baja SAE competition, the Formula SAE competition, the SMUD Solar Regatta, and National Association of Rocketry High-Powered competition. Chico State has a tradition of performing well in these competitions.
