The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department (PWFP) centralizes a range of Land Use and Capital services, including Public Works, Facilities, and Parks to ensure reasonable and safe development, plan for future needs, manage infrastructure and County facilities, and protect natural resources. The Monterey County parks system benefits the community by providing a vast assortment of outdoor recreational activities. The diversity and breadth of Monterey County's parks offers something for everyone. Park sites throughout the County serve residents and visitors by promoting health and wellness, and providing outdoor space to play, exercise and access facilities for self-directed or organized recreation.

The exiting vacancies reside in County Parks located in South County , including Lake San Antonio, Lake Nacimiento, and San Lorenzo Park.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department is in immediate need to fill both permanent and temporary vacancies in the Park Service Aide II classification. The Park Services Aide II classification supports the facilitation of park operations by performing visitor service support activities, including fee collection, routine grounds and facility maintenance and various visitor services related to public access and use in a park facility. This class works under the direction of a Park Ranger, Senior Park Ranger, Supervising Park Ranger or management level classification.

The Eligible List established from this recruitment process will be used to fill positions on a permanent and temporary basis and may be used to fill future vacancies.

Examples of Duties
Paramount duties include :

  • Receipt and accounting for cash; and issuing receipts
  • Communicate with public in receiving and giving out a wide variety of information pertaining to recreational facilities.
  • Explain rules and regulations
  • Use telephone and two-way radio
  • Perform routine park, grounds and facility maintenance, gardening, clean-up, unskilled manual labor
  • Operate and maintain grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Operate computerized cash register and tollgate procedures

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
Will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Thorough Knowledge of:

Handling and accounting for cash; Proper use and care of hand and power tools used in buildings and grounds maintenance work; and Basic operations, tools and terms used in grounds maintenance trades.
Skill and Ability to:

Learn, understand, and convey park policies, procedures, rules, and regulations to others ; Communicate effectively in person, by phone, and by two-way radio; Follow oral and written instructions; Meet public with tact and courtesy, and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; Drive vehicles and operate maintenance equipment and tools used in park grounds and facility maintenance work; Use a computerized cash register, accurately account for cash, and perform tollgate procedures.

Examples of Experience/Education/Training
Any combination of training, education, and/or experience which provides for the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties listed above is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

Six (6) months of experience performing visitor service support activities such as fee collection and cash handling, customer service, and routine grounds and facility maintenance work.

Required conditions of employment:

As a condition of employment, the incumbent will be required to:

  • Work weekends, holidays and shifts
  • Wear a uniform
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at the time of employment
  • Work outdoors and under adverse weather conditions

Some positions may require the following:

  • California Class A or B driver's license
  • Ability to operate light and heavy equipment such as a tractor, grader, dozer, backhoe, front-end loader, etc.
  • Ability to perform basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical and grounds keeping using hand and power tools.
