DESCRIPTION

The City of Long Beach, Department of Health and Human Services is recruiting for one (1) classified, full-time, Public Health Associate III position within the Community Health Bureau's Nutrition Services Division. Under general supervision, this position will oversee one of the five WIC locations throughout the City. This individual will also be responsible for leading, planning, organizing, implementing, and supervising Nutrition Services Program activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Provides nutrition and health education services in a public health setting to Women, Infants, and Children (WIC);
  • Supervises staff by planning and directing the work of others and promotes a productive work environment;
  • Disseminates nutrition education materials, provides individual counseling, breastfeeding education, and community referrals to WIC participants
  • Promotes, supports, and educates WIC participants about breastfeeding;
  • Assesses nutritional status of participants and refers them to the Registered Dietitians Nutritionist (RDN) as needed for advanced nutrition counseling;
  • Assists participants with linkages to health care, social services, and community resources;
  • May participate in planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating policies and procedures for the WIC program;
  • May prepare and generate written and/or audio-visual materials for nutrition education and breastfeeding classes;
  • May oversee the development and ensure compliance of program rules and regulations;
  • May provide presentations about nutrition, breastfeeding, and public health topics to staff, public health officials, outside agencies, and the community;
  • Conducts and participates in outreach events in the community;
  • Attends State WIC Office and City required trainings;
  • Prepares reports for the Nutrition Services Officer;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certification.
  • Four years of experience in providing maternal, infant and child nutrition education and counseling along with breastfeeding support and education.
  • Academic degrees in Community Nutrition, Public Health, or a closely related field may be substituted for required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Copy of degree or transcripts denoting degree conferment required if qualifying with an academic degree.)
  • Valid motor vehicle operator license. (Required to obtain a California motor vehicle operator license within 6 months if out of state. DMV K4 driver license information report printout required during onboarding for California residents.)

Required documents, such as transcripts, degrees and/or certification, must be uploaded to the online application at time of filing. Degrees must indicate the field of study and conferral date on diploma or transcript. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Public Health, or a closely related field. Copy of degree or transcripts denoting degree conferral required if qualifying for the position with an academic degree or academic credits.
  • Experience providing nutrition education and counseling to women, infants and children may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Proficiency of Spanish and/or Khmer language.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with breastfeeding education, promotion, and support.
  • Experience with using CDPH WIC WISE database.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays along with alternate work sites.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and electronic health record systems.
